Vintage Black Silk Tape Lace Shawl. Not sure of its age. This is a 100% HANDMADE shawl with fringe. The style is an art nouveau floral design . Here is a brief description of this lace:
The satin tape ribbon is interlocked with the webbed threads which makes the tape an integrated part of the lace rather than an appliqué. This specific construction is called a true tape lace and often referred to historically as Battenberg tape lace. The Process is as a continuous woven ribbon (or tape) basted down onto a paper pattern to form the design outlines. Then a lacemaker joins them by using a needle and thread to stitch the decorative mesh directly between the edges of the ribbon. Once the entire lace mesh is woven, the basting threads and paper are cut away, leaving the tape and lace permanently integrated as a single piece.
